Arts Council Announces 2009 Scholarship Award Recipients

On June 12, at the opening event for their Annual Members’ Exhibition, CCAC announced the winners of their 2009 Scholarship Awards. The Arts Council awarded three scholarships thanks in part, to donations made at their Summer Music Concert Series and a grant provided by the Moran Family Foundation.
Applicants must be residents of Cecil County planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate degree program in the arts or students currently enrolled in an art program at an undergraduate level. Awarded funds must be used primarily for tuition or student fees. Recipients are chosen based on artistic excellence, level of mastery in their chosen field and commitment to the pursuit of a career in the arts. The 2009 Cecil County Scholarship Award recipients are Tyler Bjerke, Rachel Dolor and Kelsey Stenta.

Tyler Bjerke lives in Rising Sun and has performed the French Horn in the Rising Sun High School and Cecil County All County bands and orchestras, the Weinstein Advanced Study Quintet at Settlement Music School, and participated in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s 2007 Brazilian tour.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been accepted to University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Cincinnati.

Visual artist, Rachel Dolor hails from Elkton.  She has attended the pre-college program at MICA and Cecil College.  She has received an Honorable Mention for the Academic Excellence in the Arts award for the state of Maryland and has been Grand Champion of the Cecil County Fair in fine arts and photography.  She created one of the 25 chosen snowmen for the city of Wilmington, Delaware. She has been accepted to MICA, Moore, the School of Visual Arts, DCAD, and Pratt Institute.

Kelsey Stenta is a resident of North East and plans to pursue a BFA in dance and education at Towson this fall.  She has been studying dance for 13 years.  She is a member of Cecil Dancenter’s performing group and performs for public school children through the CREATE program. She has performed hip-hop routines at Ripkin Stadium prior to Ironbird games. This year she was awarded the Wally & George Dashiell award at the Maryland Dance Festival for the highest audition score of all age groups.
